B&B El Fabbo Of The English Kind, Ely.

10.04

B&B El Fabbo Of The English Kind, Ely.

A gentle morning, dribbling quietly. It is a beautiful day in Ely.

Fellow guests, at the large breakfast table, informed me that Open University awards are being presented in Ely cathedral this afternoon & evening, and this is the reason why B&B Fabbo Of The English Kind is therefore full. A lady of 67, one of the guests at breakfast, is herself collecting a degree award this afternoon, following 6 years of study.

New reading: Jason Elliot’s Mirrors Of The Unseen: Travels In Iran (Picador 2006).

16.10 A wander around Ely this morning & early afternoon. with bibliophiliacal tumescence in two establishments. The first, Topping & Co. on the High Street. This is one of my favouritist general bookshops; even, I was offered tea or coffee when I went in this morning. Then, to a secondhand bookseller nearby for further wonders, none of them recent.

John & Trev have left for St. Andrew’s. I will follow shortly. Now, practising.

22.37 Bredonborough.

An easier return-drive than outgoing to Ely.

Sutton’s Arts & Crafts festival is underway & set-up in the church. And Charlie, the music director, reproved me for not mentioning, on our last visit here in December, that the organ is digital. The church faced the choice of a £250,000 refurbishment of its historic organ, or £50,000 for a contemporary model.

Every village has one: a memorial to those members of the parish who lost their lives in the two great wars of the 20th. century.

At one hour, a slightly longer performance; and unintended: this is how long the music took. A very generous & supportive audience in a respectably-filled church. Even, the proprietors of B&B El Fabbo came from Ely to witness the performance.
